Heather Heron Organic Hemp Couture Handbags
December 10 2008

Okay just how friggin’ cute are these bags? Seriously, they could be made out of Earth-killing polyester and they’d still be cute. Okay, maybe not. But thankfully, Heather Heron works only in naturally insect-resistant, anti-microbial, organic hemp, which requires no herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilizers to produce, yet is still a felony to cultivate in America. Huh? Seems like nothing could be more American: The original pair of Levi’s jeans was made of it, the first drafts of the United States Constitution and Declaration of Independence were written on it, and Betsy Ross made the first flag out of it, for god’s sake. But today you go to jail if you grow it. Thank you, Just Say No.
According to EcoStilettoistas that know, one acre of hemp produces as much pulp for paper as four acres of trees, so if hemp were planted on only 12 percent of the European landmass, it would meet the entire world’s demand for paper. Similarly, if the 1.4 billion t-shirts sold in American each year were replaced with hemp tees, the energy savings would equal 3.5 billion gigajoules and the water savings would equal 1.3 trillion gallons—enough water for half the U.S. population for an entire year. (Don’t you just love those histrionical factoids?)
But we digress. Heather’s bags are just plain gorgeous. We are seriously drooling for all of them, but especially the bejeweled Balsa clutch for night, and the Magnolia for day. If eco-luxury is the future of environmentalism, Heather Heron bags shout it from the rooftops.
