2007 Archives: Deborah Lindquist Green Clothing

Deborah Lindquist was doing green before green was even a concept. Her eponymous line of “reincarnated” (her word) clothing launched in 2004, but we remember vintage cashmere constructs popping up in fashion-forward stores in Los Angeles well before that. Lindquist’s eco-conscious clothing line combines environmental responsibility with a cutting-edge aesthetic, blending recycled cashmere, repurposed kimonos and saris, vintage silk scarves and sustainable materials such as hemp, soy and bamboo into green clothes that wink at Vivienne Westwood and nod at Betsey Johnson (before she sold nighties at Nordstrom’s).

Lindquist has street cred from Fashion Week and celebrity followers like Gwen Stefani and Demi Moore, among others, but what really gets us going is her continued commitment to the green clothing movement, participating in the U.N. Fashion Show for World Environment Day, the Environmental Media Awards, the Organic Exchange fashion event in Amsterdam and the Ethical Fashion Show in Paris. All moral commitments aside, Lindquist’s new summer collection just rocks, with its naughty-little-sailor-girl vibe and lace-trimmed hot pants, and if we ever get (re)married, the Green Wedding collection with its one-of-a-kind vintage kimono bustiers and hemp/silk organza gowns is what we’ll wear to flounce down the aisle. Come to think of it, maybe a divorce is in order. Break out the champagne!
