Sea Bags

Ahoy, maties! The perfect nautical accompaniment for a spring shopping (or beaching, or pool-siding or even picnicking) day, Sea Bags are custom-made from retired sails in Portland, Maine. The company takes the most interesting part of the sail—a star, number or letter—and crafts it into a handbag, tote, wine or diaper bag, anchoring it with a hand-spliced continuous rope handle. Evoking a Lili-Taylor-in-Mystic-Pizza kind of sexy-yet-capable coolness, Sea Bags are durable, waterproof and machine-washable, and, best of all, recycled!
Got an old sail in your locker? Sea Bags will pay for shipping or pickup of old sails to be made into new bags. In exchange, you get bags or a donation in your name to Sail Maine Scholarship Fund for children to learn to sail. Sea Bags also works with several other organizations to give back in return for used sails, including Islesboro Yacht Club Youth Sailing Program, New Bedford Community Boating, Compass Project and Maine Maritime Academy. And they support the women’s Olympic sailing Team 7 with a limited-edition bag made from red, white and blue “7” sails. Go team!
