Clorox Green Works Natural Home Cleaning Products

We were so incredibly, jadedly, snootily skeptical when word came down the pike that Clorox was launching a line of eco-friendly home cleaning products. After all, this is a manufacturer who has depended on chemicals to dominate the home cleaning market for decades. But we were impressed by just how transparent Clorox intends to be with Green Works. No smoke and mirrors, no hiding petrochems behind a few drops of essential oils.
And no, it’s not organic. But the sheer distribution capabilities of this company means that they’ve put this “green” alternative on the shelves of stores that wouldn’t otherwise look beyond the traditional chemical cleansers. It has opened the eyes of consumers who might never have thought about what they sprayed in their homes each day—conventional cleansers which contain particulate matter that make the indoor air of the typical American home on a typical cleaning day more polluted than the outdoor air of our most polluted cities. And this is according to the EPA, which, we might remind you, is not the most alarmist organization on the planet.
So what’s in Clorox Green Works natural cleaning products? Biodegradable coconut-based surfactants, citric acid, lactic acid and corn-based ethanol (alcohol). With 99 percent natural, sustainable and biodegradable ingredients, Green Works has the highest percentage of natural ingredients in cleaning products currently on the market, according to their press materials, and the company is working on alternatives to the non-natural colorant, fragrance and preservatives that make up the remaining one percent.
But here’s the kicker. According to Clorox, their Green Works is the only line of natural cleaning products on the market that perform as well as conventional cleaners. Now we all know how this data can be skewed, but the company claims to have conducted in-home, blind consumer testing with people who used Green Works cleaners for a two- to four-week period in which all five products (tackling everything from toilet bowls to windows) were rated as effective as, if not better than, leading conventional cleaners.
And honestly, our toilet bowls have never been sparklier.
