Best Mall Eco-Fashion: Weekend

What’s your weekend sustainability profile? Photo: Levi’s.
For weekends there’s nothing more ubiquitous than denim. We’ve written about our fondness for Levi’s organic cotton jeans before. Considering that the conventional cotton in one pair of jeans takes about two-thirds of a pound of pesticides to produce, it only makes sense to look for alternatives that not only eschew pesticides, but make your butt look great, too.
But now Levi’s has upped the ante with a new Water<Less line, which use up to 96% less water in the finishing process. According to the brand, the average pair of jeans is washed as many as 10 times before it even hits the store, wasting approximately 42 liters of water per pair. Who knew? Water<Less launches this month in Levi’s stores in malls nationwide, with many styles utilizing Levi’s new Curve ID technology for a better fit, and joins the brand’s signature green-tab organic cotton denim offerings as part of its’ comprehensive sustainability profile.

Levi’s Curve ID technology comes to Water<Less denim ($85 or less) this month.
Known more for the après-ski popular with 1970s Bond girls than for its’ environmentalism, Khombu‘s Kaymen vegan rain boots—crafted from sustainably sourced rubber—are a step in the right direction. Found at Macy’s, and perfect for splashing in puddles or a long walk in the park, these cute boots come in a rainbow of colors—including metallics and basic black, natch. Our favorite way to wear them was spotted earlier this year on ridiculously-chic editors in New York, who teeter around the office in impossibly high heels, then swap them for rain boots when they hit the streets. Grab a summer dress, layer it over a turtleneck and tights and add a pair of these go-anywhere boots, and your walk might just turn into a weekend.

She’s known for gorgeous oversized cocktail rings and necklaces from sheer pieces of agate, but Melissa Joy Manning’s signature hoop earrings are perfect for everything from yoga to dancing—basically anything the weekend throws your way. We’re obsessed with Melissa’s line of always-recycled metal jewelry, available at Barney’s, which is produced locally and fair trade in Oakland, CA. A true social and environmental visionary, Melissa Joy Manning just opened her first retail store in Berkeley, CA; her company was recently named to Inc. Magazine’s Inner City 100 list, which honors the fastest growing companies operating in U.S. “inner cities.” And she makes a damn fine pair of hoops.
