And now we come to the truly dirty section of our Sustainable Sex Guide—and we’re not making any judgments on your fetishes, we’re simply talking about the toxins in your toys. Especially if they were purchased in the last 10 years, old-school vibrators and other toys are full of VOC-emitting chemicals. Off gassing is a problem under ordinary circumstances, but imagine how much worse these chemicals can be on your naughty bits.
Instead, look for toys made from silicone, wood or glass—the last sounds crazy but they’re safe and super pretty—like those found at Coco de Mer. Not at a sustainable shop? If you’re unsure of a new vibrator’s provenance, give it a good sniff. If it smells like a vinyl shower curtain, you can bet your bottom dollar that it’s full of stuff you don’t want in your nether regions.
