Lovin’ these red-hot lips—lead-free, please! Photo: Giles.

Bold lips—especially bold RED lips—are one of our absolute favorite fall makeup looks. Many a runway show has paired the intense red lip with a muted or even bleached-out brow. And while we wouldn’t recommend obliterating your brows for every day, we do like how an understated eye puts the emphasis on the lips.

The bold-lip look really works for every woman, it’s just about finding the red color that works best for you. Blondes tend to look better in a “cooler” or “true” red shade, which has a teeny-tiny bit of blue in it. Dark-haired lovelies, meanwhile, look best in a “warm” red shade, with hints of berry or brown. A red with undertones of yellow or orange looks great on darker-skinned ecoistas. And nobody looks good in leaded lipstick—no matter what the shade!

Check out Gabriel Cosmetics’ ZuZu Luxe Lipstick, which offers a variety of red shades that are all gluten-free and lead-free—including a near-perfect candy-apple red called, appropriately, “Starlet.”

To lock your lipstick in place, start by gently dusting fine, talc- and paraben-free powder on your lips. Then apply your lipstick using a lip brush, as it gives you a more precise application. Blot and repeat, then work it.
