Miranda was the first person ever to appear pregnant on the cover of Australian Vogue, in this month’s issue. This photo: Catwalk Queen; all other photos: KORA Organic Skincare.

by Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff

You may not have known Miranda Kerr’s name before last year—when she became a paparazzi magnet by marrying Orlando Bloom a month after announcing their engagement, then confirming her pregnancy a few weeks later—but you’d certainly recognize her face. The supermodel has posed for everyone from Jil Sander to Prada, and her girl-next-door, dimpled beauty has made her a Victoria’s Secret favorite—both on the runway and off. I wanted to highlight how this model citizen takes environmentalism to heart: Creating the KORA Organic Skincare line, supporting causes like Wildlife Warriors Worldwide—and posing naked and chained to a tree on the cover of Rolling Stone to protest the lack of a protected habitat for the endangered koala. I traded emails with Miranda from her native Australia, where she was waiting out the end of a joyous pregnancy. Miranda and Orlando welcomed their baby boy, Flynn, into the world on January 6th. Part Two of Four.

Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff: I understand that you often work with Christy Coleman, who was the first high-profile makeup artist to completely “green” her kit with eco-friendly products. Is natural beauty important to you?

Miranda Kerr: I love working with Christy because she is so educated about the benefits of eco-friendly and organic products. Because I’m in an industry where makeup is a necessity, it’s such a luxury to work with Christy.  Other than for work I rarely wear makeup, as I love nothing more than to use organic skin-care on my face and body. There is nothing more beautiful than healthy, radiant skin.

RLS: Christy is our EcoHero this month. Who’s yours?

MK: Rose Marie Swift. She created an original, pure, organic color cosmetic line called RMS Beauty. Rose Marie is an outspoken advocate for protecting ourselves from toxic chemicals that are found in beauty products today. Not only is she educating through the beauty industry that she works in, but Rose Marie also created a website for everyone to access.
I love and use all of Rose-Marie’s products as they are both healing and nourishing; they’re anti-aging but feel amazing and light on the skin.

RLS: You launched KORA, an organic skin-care line, in Australia last year. Why was it important to you to create a line of your own? Was it because you couldn’t find skin-care that met your standards of organic and natural—or performance? Or both?

MK: I created my KORA Organics Skincare line because I wanted a skin-care range that contained all of the ingredients I personally wanted and could not find. For three years, while personally testing the products, I worked with KORA’s certified organic chemists and aromatherapists to perfect the range. I am so happy to say that the testimonies on our site reflect the results our customers are achieving. KORA Organics skin-care products are “Food For the Skin;” they nourish, nurture and protect.

RLS: Australian natural beauty standards are so much more stringent than those in the U.S. I recently featured Zuii on the “Today” show—it was the only USDA Certified Organic makeup line that I could find, and it was made in Australia! Why do you think we’re lagging so far behind? And, most importantly, when can we find KORA in American stores?

MK: I feel there is a real movement toward certified organics and certified natural and each country and culture will decide when they embrace such change. It is interesting because there are many certifying bodies around the world. We chose Eco-Cert because it is worldwide and they specialize in the certification of skin-care, whereas most other governing bodies cover all areas of organic certification but do not specialize in skin-care. I think in general people aren’t educated enough on the benefits of organics.  I created a blog for the purpose of providing information on organics, health and well being. Right now KORA Organics by Miranda Kerr is available world wide online.
