Lake Bell Lives Up to Her Name

What’s in a name? Hollywood up-and-comer Lake Bell took time out from shooting the enticingly-named “A Good Old Fashioned Orgy” and promoting October’s “Pride and Glory,” in which she co-starred with Colin Farrell and Ed Norton, to talk about a commitment to sustainability that she’s had from day one. Literally.
ES: When did you start getting involved in eco-consciousness?
LB: My name is Lake. I was born eco-conscious.
ES: How important do you think these kinds of changes are for you, personally?
LB: Being eco-conscious is a wonderful excuse to cut costs at home. Turning your water heater down and shutting off lights in rooms you are not using are very obvious ways to save energy, but also, it’s just cheaper. In this current financial climate (pun intended), it’s worth it. Also, being green leads to chic thriftiness. Beyond my awesomely cool collection of canvas bags (keep at least two in your car for impromptu purchases), products like energy saving light bulbs save me money on my electric bill, but I mean, in truth: they just look crazy cool, am I right? They’re like futuristic neon pinwheel sculptures.
ES: What about for the planet?
LB: Look, I can’t act like I am some authority on climate change, but I will say that I believe that every small effort we make individually to alter the way we live to be more green/planet friendly has a powerful effect on our progress towards keeping our planet from getting worse. I mean, I need to think of it that way… Many people say we are at the point of no return. If that’s true, perhaps collectively we are capable of at least slowing down the process of the Earth’s deterioration.
ES: What are your favorite green fashion labels?
LB: Stella McCartney is a green fashion goddess and is one of my favorite designers. Also, Rogan is another go-to for green fashion. Although the greatest green items in my closet are recycled items: vintage. Easily half of what’s hanging in my closet is vintage or second hand. It’s my favorite kind of recycling.
ES: What are the best eco-friendly beauty finds?
LB: My new favorite green beauty products are from Korres, which is conveniently sold at Sephora now. I am currently addicted to their range of lip-liners, but they make a great line of body and hair care products. They even have items for men. Korres substitutes synthetic ingredients with all natural, organic substitutes. You can definitely feel the difference. It’s like clean beauty care.
ES: Who’s your eco-idol?
LB: My dear friend and eco-warrior: David de Rothschild.
ES: What’s your worst eco-sin?
LB: I do not drive a hybrid, which I feel pretty guilty about. That said, I do have a fuel-efficient car that I bought used! (Mini Cooper 2004)
ES: What’s the best green advice you ever received—and who gave it to you?
LB: CLEAN UP THAT MESS! —My mom.
