Don’t judge a book by its cover. That old adage is proven true yet again by AnnaLynne McCord, who made her mark as the scandalous Eden Lord on “Nip/Tuck,” currently stars as the social-climbing Naomi Clark on “90210,” and typically works the paparazzi with pouty-lipped poses gleaned from a teenage career as a Wilhelmina model.
But for a woman who made her mark as a relentlessly sexy symbol, AnnaLynne’s off-screen activities are surprising: She’s most passionate about human rights, devoting countless hours and boundless energy speaking out about organizations like The Somaly Mam Foundation, which is dedicated to building awareness and ending the global sex trafficking of women and children, and the St. Bernard Project, a nonprofit community-based organization which creates housing opportunities for Hurricane Katrina survivors. We spoke with AnnaLynne from her home in Los Angeles. Part Four of Four.
EcoStiletto: And now for the frivolous fashion and beauty questions we always ask. As an actress, your day job involves a lot of chemical makeup. Do you ever use natural beauty products?
AnnaLynne McCord: All of my skincare is by Arcona. It’s all-natural ingredients, cranberries and pomegranate and different fruits and vegetables. It’s yummy, it smells delicious and it’s good for your skin.
ES: Have you brought any eco-friendly beauty products to “90210’“s makeup department?
AM: Well, they use airbrush on my face, which I don’t like as it’s obviously chemicals, so that’s a difficult part of the makeup process. I recently had to be an avatar and it was full-body makeup. But whenever I get home I have natural products that I use, and my moisturizers on set.
ES: Do you have any favorite eco-friendly fashion labels that you can share with us?
AM: I wear a lot of cotton and hemp and bamboo. Also there’s a company called Rosecraft which is organic, it’s a lot of scarves and stuff like that, and it’s hand-woven by women in Africa; the company makes it possible for them to sustain their lives. They’re really beautiful and warm and I love them. So if you want to do a multiple good cause, it’s called Rosecraft.
EcoStiletto: What’s your worst eco-sin?
AnnaLynne McCord: My worst eco-sin? What do you mean by that?
ES: Some people will say flying or plastic water bottles—but it sounds like you’re recycling them. That kind of a thing?
AM: Probably flying because I fly non-stop. But, obviously, working with organizations that are not in the city that I live in, I’ve been to Thailand several times last year, I go to New Orleans a lot, so even in my attempt to help that definitely would be mine. I’m always on planes.
ES: Who’s your eco-hero and why?
AM: Leonardo Di Caprio. He’s not just showing up—he’s not just talking the talk, he’s walking the walk. He really lives the lifestyle, he doesn’t just show up for an event and talk about it. He’s my eco-hero.
ES: What’s the biggest green change you’d like to make in your life—even if it’s impossible right now?
AM: I’m purchasing a town house, and I’m trying to figure out how to put solar panels in. I want to be able to utilize solar energy more. We discovered this, we know it works and we don’t use it enough. Also, Mini Cooper came out with an electric car and that’s going to be my next car.
ES: You’ll have the solar powered battery charging station.
AM: Yes!
