Sustainable Fashion is getting hip! This week I headed down to the D & A Green Room in downtown Los Angeles. Co-produced by Barbara Kramer, the Green Room gifts space to selected designers who create their products practicing sustainable methods. This may take various forms including the use of ecologically friendly materials, sustainable production, supporting local and fair trade labor and/or donating revenues to indigenous groups.
As a pioneer in the sustainable design movement, D & A launched a Green Initiative in 2007, which has grown from an eco-conscious showcase to dozens of ecological minded vendors and artists interspersed among D & A’s hundreds of presenting “conventional” designers. In addition, D & A continues its efforts of promoting eco-minded practices at its’ show spaces through improved recycling, biodegradable catering supplies, and green cleaning supplies.
I was blown away by some of the vendors and their fashionable designs. We have come a long way from the old granola hippy style eco fashion! A few of the designers and pieces that I love include beautiful organic lingerie from Bazsarozsa and Viola Living Jewels—I had never seen botanical jewelry before! Also, ORG by Vio, amazing organic rainforest products made by indigenous people. For a truly sophisticated look, Carrie Parry is gorgeous! For really cool recycled bags, check out Eco Alf, and if you wear leather, Artemas Quibble. Finally, if you love chocolate as much as I do, you’ll love this raw organic chocolate manufacturer, Zen Bunni!
