By now we’ve all heard of SuperFoods Rx, the brand based on books written by Dr. Steven Pratt and Kathy Matthews, which takes as its premise the idea that some foods are dramatically better than others in improving our health and longevity. Calling these foods “omnipotent” in their ability to deliver beneficial nutrients in unparalleled concentrations, especially when combined with other superfoods, the SuperFoods Rx line delivers foods, drinks, supplements, cosmeceuticals and now…age-fighting chocolate?

Yes it seems too good to be true, EcoStilettoistas, but the folks at SuperFoods Rx assure us that eating a piece (or four) of their super-fortified chocolate every day will actually make our skin smoother, more supple—dare we say, younger, perhaps?

Fortified with omega-3 DHA and EPA, this chocolate bar provides 50 mg of vital omega-3 oils and is made with 72% organic cocoa, which is non-alkalinized so as to retain the highest possible phytonutrient and polyphenol concentrations. The antioxidant power of cocoa’s polyphenols is scientifically shown to inhibit aging, inflammation and free radical damage to the skin, according to studies quoted by the SuperFoods team. (Do they travel with a phone booth? Inquiring minds want to know). Regular consumption of chocolate increases the skin’s resistance to UV light, reduces roughness in skin texture, and increases blood flow to the skin and subcutaneous tissues—promoting skin plumpness. There are heart benefits and cholesterol lowering benefits and benefits that guard against strokes. But we keep coming back to this:

“Eating a daily serving of chocolate with a high cocoa content can improve the appearance of fine lines as well as provide protection from the harsh effects of the sun, dry air and environmental pollutants,” says Dr. Joy Twersky, a board-certified dermatologist in sunny Southern California (who presumably is not affiliated with a phone booth).

We knew our bordering-on-obsessive, post-lunch, dark-chocolate fixation had a higher purpose. And if we can add omega-3s to the mix in this fantastic-tasting, melt-in-your-mouth, we-can’t-believe-it’s-good-for-us chocolate bar from SuperFoods Rx? More power to us.
