Until recently, we were all about slathering on the sunscreen, rain or shine. Alarming statistics about sun bouncing off your car chrome and through the window, coupled with a propensity to get gigantic patches of melasma (thank you, birth control pills) had us measuring out the tablespoons every morning.

But we read some scary stuff recently about the chemicals in sunscreen, such as PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid) and oxybenzone, which work by absorbing the sun’s energy so it doesn’t penetrate the skin, and then releasing that captured energy by breaking apart, according to the Environmental Working Group. And like the fact that they don’t work. Or that they break down in the sun and their labels lie about their efficacy. (“Gentle as water”? Well, duh.)

And though the jury’s still out on the safety of micronization, since these molecules sometimes get so small they penetrate the skin’s outside layer, the consensus seems to be that for now, those that are natural zinc oxide-based are safest—and no longer leave you with big white splotches on your nose. That’s why Soleo Organic All Natural Sunscreens are such a find—made with zinc in Australia where they know from sunscreen, they provide SPF 30, broad-spectrum, water-resistant protection for up to three hours. And they smell fabulous like macadamia nuts and sunshine. Yum!
