Seems like every woman we know has had some kind of run in with what the white coats call “melasma” or “hyperpigmentation,” a fancy-nancy name for those weird extra-tan spots you get on your forehead, lips and (sometimes) cheeks from pregnancy, birth control pills or just plain living your life without spending each sunny day under a hat as big as an umbrella.

And although some women swear by them, readily prescribed blotch-remedy creams typically contain hydroquinone,  which has the unfortunate reputation of being linked to cancer and neurotoxicity, toxic to the immune system, a known skin irritant and allergen, an endocrine disruptor, classified as an air pollutant and pesticide by the EPA, and oh so much more, which you can read about here at Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database.

Is there anything on your body this chemical doesn’t attack? Seems like very little, except the very thing it’s supposed to, i.e. the blotches, since hydroquinone also has the unfortunate side effect of making the skin hyper-sensitive to the sun, so that the minute you go outside without the kind of head-to-toe, sun-shielding getup last spotted on Madonna, the spots come back.

And they’re worse.

Thankfully, June Jacobs has created a Brightening Moisturizer that’s paraben and preservative free, and contains botanically derived lightening agents like Lemon Peel, Bearberry Root, Mulberry Root and Licorice Extract, which reduce hyper-pigmentation by inhibiting the enzyme that makes the skin overproduce the pigment in the first place. Nourishing sweet almond oil and shea butter hydrate, while lactic acid exfoliates, and a bunch of kick-ass natural antioxidants go to work on your free radicals.

Get ready to downsize your hat.
