2008 Archives: Circus Yoga

We love yoga, but there’s a point where you either devote your life to it or you kind of burn out. Once kids and jobs start eating up a big chunk of time each day, it’s hard to justify setting aside the two hours it takes to make it to class (although true yogis greet each day with sun salutes and probably feel much less cranky then we do when we hobble in for our first cup of tea in the morning). And we know a bunch of you are going to do a big ol’ “say what” double-take to this, but we have to say that without an inspiring teacher, yoga these days can be, well, a little boring. (There. We said it. So sue us.)
Which brings us to the Circus Yoga, which is so incredibly phenomenal and awesome and really makes us once again see how inspiring the practice of yoga can be. (Can you forgive us now?)
Circus Yoga is kind of a cross between Ashtanga and “Twister.” You don’t have to be a yogi to do it, but together with your partner you stretch and twist and shape your two bodies into all kinds of phenomenal poses such as Superman (like “flying” a baby), Saddle (You’re in Tabletop; he’s doing a backbend with his back on your front, grabbing his ankles—or trying to), or Dragon (Don’t ask).
You laugh, fall down, roll around, and in so doing, discover how powerful and bonded you and your partner (read: life partner, love partner, child, friend) can be. In Spring 2009, Circus Yoga will launch “Flying Kids” cards so you can practice the poses at home. And presto, yoga enters a whole new dimension!
