Despite its popularity—it’s everywhere from the corner drugstore to the QVC, with sales increasing 30 times in the last five years—we’ve been hesitant about mineral makeup, having had terrifying experiences in which it settled into fine lines and instantly transformed us into mini Tammy Fay Bakers.

But so many people rave about the stuff, which is formulated with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide making it the perfect concealer-meets-sunscreen, that we’re trying to conquer this morbid fear.

Case in point is reader Melissa Gabriel, who wrote in to tell us about Alima Cosmetics, which each month gives five percent of proceeds to women’s organizations like the Global Fund for Women and Living Beyond Breast Cancer.  We also like that they are certified as a “natural cosmetic” by the German BDIH organization—typically, European certification means more than American, where “natural” is virtually meaningless. But it’s the inexpensive ($1 to 1.50 for a week’s worth) sample sizes that had us at hello. Considering there are over 50 shades to choose from in the Satin Matte Foundation alone, this line obviously understands the importance of getting the color right. And that alone is worth a second look.
