2007 Archives: Timberland Earthkeeper Eco-Friendly Boots

Once synonymous with construction sites and hunting camps, Timberland went urban and blinged out a few years back, culimating in rainbow of customization options and an eponymous rap star, give or take a letter or two. Now the company’s going back to its roots with the new Earthkeepers collection. More at home in the woods than on the stage, Earthkeepers feature organic canvas uppers and a 30 percent recycled rubber outsole, laces made from 10 percent recycled materials and a 70 percent recycled, moisture-wicking lining. The boots are leather, yes, but some of it’s recycled, like the hang-tag that bears the message “What kind of footprint will you leave?” Which is apt, considering Timberland’s commitment to using renewable energy, recycled and renewable materials, less waste and less chemicals. We love the pull-on women’s boot in a dependable brown, which glams up a pair of tights or jeans way better than your tired old Uggs, but we’re kind of addicted to the “build your own boot” feature on the Timberland website, and wish we could spice these babies up with a few initials or something. In organic cotton thread, of course.
