EcoStilettoistas are all about safe sex, but we are up in arms (legs?) about what we learned from the friendly folks over at Smitten Kitten. C’mon, don’t pretend you don’t know what we’re talking about. Everyone’s tried a toy once or twice. (Or thrice, or…Frice?) And you know that lovely new plastic smell? Well, sweetheart, that’s just your new toy off-gassing, meaning it’s releasing VOCs into the environment.

So what’s the deal with VOCs? Funny you should wonder about that, because we did. And what we learned was pretty darned scary. According to Anna Getty, our green lifestyle guru, Organic compounds are the basis of all living things and contain carbon as their principal element. VOCs, in contrast, are chemical compounds that vaporize at room temperature. Some are suspected carcinogens, meaning they can cause cancer when you breathe them in. And you’re putting these babies in your hoo-ha.

But that’s not what we’re most worried about. The scary part is that sex toys are unregulated, meaning there are no guidelines for manufacturing, no requirements to disclose what materials are involved in manufacturing and no regulatory body that governs what plastics and chemicals are used manufacturing. And if you think this industry has your best interests at heart, think again.

Fabulously, we stumbled upon the folks at Smitten Kitten, who provide an online smorgasbord of non-toxic sex toys and have made it their mission to push for regulatory action on the hazardous chemicals and chemicals in all consumer products—chemicals like phthalates, which were recently banned by the Governator in children’s toys (but are still going strong in yours). We won’t tell you our favorites (blush), but let’s just say that we used our online discount again and again and again…

Make sure to buy Eco friendly sex toys! Be careful on some of the big name manufactures, because most of those sex toys are produced in china and are no Eco friendly. Stick to some good metal vibrators and sex toys.
