2007 Archives: Nui Organics: Green Eco-Scarf For Everyone

There’s something about this time of year that makes us want to pack up the tank tops and flip flops and pile on the sweaters and scarves. Unfortunately for many of us (and the earth), temps are still breaking records while stores are stocking up on, well, stockings. There’s nothing snugglier than cozying up in a wool sweater in front of a crackling fire. Unless you start thinking about the harsh scouring agents and dyes used in conventional wool production—chemicals responsible for many people’s “allergic” reaction.
In contrast, the organic wool used in Nui Organics is truly virgin and free of the pesticides, formaldehyde, polyester, foams, dioxins and other additives used in conventional manufacturing processes. Instead of spraying or dipping, these sheep are bred for resistance to parasites and fed on organically certified pastures to build healthy immune systems. Their wool is scoured with a biodegradable cleansing agent before being carded and spun at a certified organic mill, then stored with herbs that deter moths.
Even natural dyes, because of their poor colorfastness, are often accompanied by heavy metals in the dye-fixing agent; in contrast, the cream, cocoa and silver colors of Nui Organics wool are all natural colors of the wool.
That’s the good news. The bad news is that until now, Nui Organics only made sweaters, hats and jackets for kids. But thankfully, Nui now introduces its softest, snuggliest scarf in a size that’s perfect for men, women and children.
Woolly bully.
