2007 Archives: Manduka Environmentally Safe Yoga Mats

Take a look at your yoga mat. It’s about the same amount of material as, say, a tire. Now think of how long that rolled up tire takes to biodegrade. Now take that tire, multiply it by the 18 million Americans that practice yoga, and throw it on a landfill. That’s a pretty big footprint for green fitness.
Now take a look at a Manduka. Before it was fashionable to be green, Manduka was making the Black Mat™ the only mat manufactured without any toxic byproducts and certified to be environmentally safe by EcoTex (a European certification agency).
Marketed as “the last mat you’ll ever have to buy” because it’s so durable—as compared to many other yoga mats which wear out in little over a year—the Black Mat™ is slip resistant (even when wet) but not sticky, and firm enough to resist bunching even when you’re practicing on a carpet. Stay tuned for Manduka’s natural rubber mat, set to launch in 2007. And the next time your tire wears out, consider upgrading your tread.
