2007 Archives: Loyale Green Fashion: Vegan Faux Fur Costilla Jacket
Loyale makes just the sort of green clothes we love—totally fashion-forward looks in cuts and colors that don’t scream eco-friendly but let you feel all smug and righteous when you wear them. We flipped for the summer collection of organic cotton, little lady frocks like the Pasadena and Madera dresses with their oh-so-retro smocking and handmade lace detailing, and the Niland jacket in white transitions seamlessly (pun intended) to cooler climes, but it’s the fall collection that makes us long for a big ol’ walk-in freezer to get lost in so we can wear things like the fuzzy bunny vegan faux fur Costilla jacket while we shiver charmingly.
Faux fur has been on the no-no-never-never list since about 1985 when we woke up to how icky-clumpy synthetic fur wears. And while always knew we didn’t like the feel of the stuff, what we didn’t know is that it’s typically made of non-biodegradable synthetics like acrylic, nylon and polyester. According to the Fur Commission, half the emissions of greenhouse gases come from acrylic and nylon manufacturing and polyester is made from oil-based petrochemicals—the production of all three create chemical runoff that pollutes our oceans, rivers and water table. In contrast, the lining and faux fur on Loyale’s Costilla jacket (available mid-September) is one hundred percent organic cotton cultivated deep in the heart of Texas. So back to the shivering. Oh yes, we ecostilettoistas have a vivid fantasy life but seriously, can this be any cuter? We couldn’t dream of it.
