According to the Daily Mail, the average woman shops 300 days a year. That’s a veritable mountain o’ plastic and paper bags clogging up our landfills. By now, many of us are toting cool, (preferably organic) cloth grocery bags from our favorite stores, which is a great way to reduce, reuse and feel pretty damn smug about ourselves in the bargain. But what about the mall? Do you really need that giganto gap bag to tote home your new inspi(red) tee? Furthermore, with a gap-sized advertising budget, do you really want to give them a freebie by walking around with a mini billboard on your arm? Just say no and line up for a trendy reusable shopping bag by an alternative designer that you’d be proud to tote anywhere and everywhere. We’re not talking Anya Hindmarch—unless you’re prepared to fly internationally, you’re not getting that super-trendy, sold-out I’m Not A Plastic Bag any time soon. But there are some fabulous alternatives on the horizon—and we especially love the Get Hip Get Green bags from designer Lisa Leija. They’re made of partially recycled materials, spout eco-appropriate messages and cool retro-hip designs, and best of all, the $5 purchase benefits The Green Ambassadors, an organization that works with high school students on critical environmental issues. Leija knows from committed—a children’s clothing designer by trade, she was called to the cause when she began producing her filmmaker husband Jimmy Wardell’s “Paper or Plastic? The Documentary,” set for release in 2008.  Takin’ it to the big screen and keepin’ it in the family. How cute is that?
